Mokey’s New Friends

Connie Arnold’s new picture book, “Mokey’s New Friends,” is a sweet story of an escaped zoo monkey out in the world, meeting new animal friends. Mokey is a playful, active young monkey. One day when the other monkeys go off to sleep, Mokey finds an unlocked cage door and decides to go exploring. In the outside world, Mokey is open to meeting and playing with new friends. They’re not monkeys, they’re different from Mokey, but he enjoys playing with new friends—a donkey and a squirrel. He’ll have much to talk about with his monkey friends when he makes his way back to his zoo home.

Marina Movshina’s water color artwork keeps the action moving. It’s clear that Mokey is adventurous, fun-loving, and open to new experiences. Ms. Arnold’s book is recommended for students ages 5 through 8, for parents and grandparents, and for teachers and school libraries. The message of acceptance of differences and sharing fun activities together is a good one for children and would fit in well with diversity curricula.
