Helping Herbie
Hedgehog
By Melissa Abramovitz
Illustrated by Robert
Lee Beers
“Helping Herbie
Hedgehog,” an easy reader chapter book by Melissa Abramovitz and
illustrated by Robert Lee Beers, is a great fun adventure. As he goes on his
travels and about his daily life, Ms. Abramovitz has put Herbie in many silly
situations requiring a choice or a decision. Then asks the reader what should
Herbie do? Here’s the first examples:
Herbie wants to visit his cousin Rhea
Who lives in a country across the sea.
Should Herbie ride his bike to make this trip?
Or would you recommend a sailing
ship?
Now Herbie wants to go to the planet Mars!
Will his rollerskates take him through all the stars?
Or might a rocketship whizzing through the air
Be more likely to help Herbie get
there?
The artwork by Robert Lee Beers is clever, amusing, and adds
to the fun of the story. Beers’s illustrations almost make hedgehogs seem
cuddly and cute, if a little clueless.
This will be a perfect story for a class or home read aloud.
I expect lots of giggles and laughter as the children enjoy Herbie’s funny
choices. Highly recommended for ages 5 through 8, and younger children will
also enjoy it as a read aloud, since they can follow the action in the
illustrations.
