Real Mysterious Easter Eggs

By Patricia Karwatowicz

Illustrated by Kathleen Bullock

“Real Mysterious Easter Eggs,” by Patricia Karwatowicz, and illustrated by Kathleen Bullock, is an Easter story about the true or “real” meaning of Easter. Isabela and Noah go to visit great grandmother, Granny Gertrude, or G.G. as they call her. They’re there to help decorate eggs for the family Easter dinner place settings. There are some “mysteries” to be solved.

They enter Granny’s kitchen, but there’s no “dye” in sight. What will G.G. use for dyes? That’s the first mystery. When the dyes are made, there are only 4 colors—another mystery. And they are coloring twelve eggs—why only twelve? G.G. shares the “real” meaning of the colors they make. Then they guess why twelve eggs. Together they tell the story of Jesus and the first Easter as they mix the colors which remind them of Jesus and why we celebrate Easter.

Kathleen Bullock’s realistic artwork depicts Granny Gertrude and the children in the kitchen, and also illustrates scenes from the life of Jesus. The illustrations and story are well-matched. It feels like a personal glimpse into a family gathering—working and sharing in Granny’s kitchen. The illustrations about the life of Jesus also feel personal to the story.

Ms. Karwatowicz and Ms. Bullock have created a lovely Easter book that lovingly presents the real meaning of Easter. This book clearly belongs in Christian schools, Children’s Sermons, and in Sunday Schools. There’s also a page with an Easter Egg Cracking Game. Recommended for children ages six to ten.
