Mom, Is There a Santa Claus? Review

Mom, Is There a Santa Claus?

By Susan J. Berger

Illustrated by KC Snider

Susan J. Berger’s new picture book, illustrated by KC Snider, asks the question “Mom Is There a Santa Claus?” that parents are asked every year. To many families, Santa Claus represents the spirit of Christmas and the joy of giving. Parents love the wonder and surprise on children’s faces on Christmas morning, when they see the gifts brought by Santa. But as children grow, they hear rumors or strong statements that Santa Claus isn’t real—but is just a myth.

In Ms. Berger’s sweet picture book, Lucas’ mother has to answer the question—is Santa real? How do you tell your growing child something that has been a family tradition and a closely guarded secret? There’s possible disillusionment and loss of faith. But Ms. Berger finds an inspiring and meaningful way to do it in this story that I hope parents will appreciate and use as needed.

The illustrations by the gifted KC Snider are beautiful, nostalgic, and appealing. Her artwork complements Ms. Berger’s story perfectly. Each scene is a gracious homage to the spirit of Christmas, our collective Christmas memories, and loving families everywhere.

This lovely picture book is a welcome addition to family holiday collections and traditions. It will help parents answer the sticky question, is there really a Santa Claus? Highly recommended for ages 7 to 10.
