I love Scotti Cohn’s picture book,“Big Cat,
Little Kitty.” Ms. Cohn has contrasted the majesty, characteristics, and
territoriality of the large cats with comparable domestic cats. Each day of the
week a big cat is featured in his or her habitat. That same day a domesticated
little cat is shown in a similar environment:
a porch, house, garden, park, playground, pond, etc. It’s a wonderful idea.
The contrast and repetition works well.
Here’s part of the first examples:
One
fine Monday night, a big cat paces among the vines and trees. . .
“Who
are you?” asks a gibbon, and whose jungle is this?”
“.
. . I am Tiger and this is MY jungle.”
And the little kitty’s version:
“I am
Tiggy and this is MY porch.”
It is beautifully illustrated by Susan Detwiler. Ms.
Detwiler’s illustrations are gorgeous. They deftly move the reader from scene
to scene, from the wild to the domestic.
However, in the ebook version I
received, it was hard to read some of the text because of the formatting over
the artwork. I checked the Amazon “look inside” and in the Kindler version,
that formatting problem has been eliminated. I don’t know how the print version
is formatted.
At the back of the book, Ms. Cohn has added information
on the two main types of big cats, a quiz on their habitat on the world map, description
of cat senses and adaptations, and a true/false quiz. This book is highly
recommended for ages 5 through 8, and for school and home libraries.
