HER BROWN HAIR
Written and Illustrated

by Jill Dana

Jill Dana’s new picture book, “Her Brown Hair,” is a companion to her first book, “Her Pink Hair,” which is about a child who has cancer and doesn’t come home from her last hospital visit. “Her Brown Hair,” is also about a sick child. Her friends visit her in the hospital and at home. They share their favorite books with her and know they’ll always be friends. I love that they share their books with their friend.

Ms. Dana’s artwork is done in simple, three dimensional clay figures. Her folk art style is easy for children to relate to. They can put themselves in the scenes with the sick child and her friends. The simplicity is elegant and eloquent.

Like “Her Pink Hair,” “Her Brown Hair” can help open scary and difficult conversations about illness and hospitalization. Ms. Dana’s book speaks to personal and universal themes of health, well being, friendship, dealing with illness, and the fear of hospitals. It is highly recommended for hospitals, medical offices, and school and home libraries.  For ages 5 through 8.
