The Ant Who Can’t
La Hormiga Que No
Puede
by A.M. Vela
Illustrated by Denis
Proulx
A.M. Vela's picture book,“The Ant Who Can’t/La Hormiga Que No Puede,” is a bilingual
story about an ant who is ill-suited for her role in the ant colony.
Her sister worker ants, Mina and Lara, are able to carry fifty times
their weight in food stuffs, but Frita simply cannot. Even the smallest load is a struggle for her. Maybe she isn't fit to be a food carrier.
When a monster wasp threatens the colony, Frita
faces the threat showing her true nature as a brave soldier ant. To her surprise, as well
as the other ants’ amazement, Frita saves the day. From then on, she is a respected member
of the soldier force protecting her fellow ants.
The artwork, by Denis Proulx, is in a kid-friendly cartoon style that children enjoy.
His illustrations are simple and clear. Both non-readers and beginning readers
can easily follow the story and the action.
This book can show children about finding and using your special talents to make a big difference.
We want them to learn that we are unique with different gifts and abilities. Our gifts may be our strength, or other abilities, such as being good with our hands, or our
voices, or our minds. Teachers, parents, and grandparents can help children
discover their special gifts and talents so they can all grow and bloom. Since this
book is bilingual, it supports students learning English and Spanish. Recommended for ages 5 to 8.
