MARVELOUS MIDDLE GRADE MONDAY

Earthquake! by Susan J. Berger

Illustrated by Eugene Ruble

“Earthquake!” is an important book by Susan J. Berger, illustrated by Eugene Ruble. It’s a book that kids, parents, and teachers need to read and study. She wrote the book after the Northridge quake in 1994, in Southern California. We’ve just had the ten year anniversary of that devastating quake. This is a good time to re-read this book, or read it for the first time, if you haven’t read it yet. It’s especially important for areas of the country (and world) that are prone to earthquakes.

“Earthquake!” has lots of factoids that are well presented in a straightforward and humorous way. The scientific process is explained in sufficient detail to be interesting, but not so detailed as to confuse or overwhelm kids. It’s in plain English. There are lots of illustrations and important tips for preparing for earthquakes and what to do if you find yourself in an earthquake. The emergency preparedness tips, kits, and plans are important for everyone to know to be prepared.

Eugene Ruble’s artwork adds to the interest and humor of the book. It helps to clarify the scientific process in terms that are easily understood by kids. The scientific facts are supported by appropriate references.

As we in Northern California approach April and the 26th anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, I urge parents, teachers, schools, school libraries, and emergency services departments in cities where earthquakes are common to get this book, read it with your kids. You need to be prepared for “The Big One” that we all know will come. Thank you, Susan Berger and Eugene Ruble, for this important book, for kids age six to nine.

  1. With several smaller quakes on the Northern CA coast recently I wouldn't be surprised if another big one is coming.

  3. This book certainly fills a niche that, as far as I know, has been neglected. My extended family no longer lives in CA but I have friends there. Wishing Susan much success with this book!
