Bon Bon

by Barbara Bockman
illustrated by Eugene Ruble

“Bon Bon,” a new picture book by Barbara Bockman, is a sweet story of a gently used stuffed poodle who longs for a home with a loving child. Day after day Bon Bon sits in the window of the Twice Loved Toy Shop in Paris, France, patiently waiting her turn to be chosen and taken to a new home with a caring child. Other toys come, wait, and go, too. From time to time Bon Bon’s view of Paris, and the passersby’s view of the toys in the window, is blocked by other toys. This lowers Bon Bon’s chance of being seen as folks walk by.

On a day that Bon Bon is blocked from view by a much larger stuffed bear, she resigns to wait her turn. But no, events transpire to knock the bear down! Will this be the day Bon Bon is chosen? Run get the book and find out for yourself!

The pastel artwork by Eugene Ruble shows some of the famous sights in Paris that are seen from the toy shop. When the toys talk of seeing other landmarks, Ruble brings them into view. There is an old-fashioned look and feel to this story. This would be a good book to share with little ones and talk of traveling, sight-seeing, getting souvenirs, and what makes a good souvenir item to remember visiting a certain place.

This story speaks to friendship, patience, kindness, and the comfort of home. And speaks to every child and parent who wonders what will become of my beloved childhood comfort toy. It gives hope that much loved toys may become “twice loved.” Recommended for ages 5 to 8.
